The State of the State

Here are a few of the local headlines from a Minnesota News Outlet, Kare 11, from 04/24/2007:

Minnesotan killed in Missouri plane crash
• Teen charged with sexual assault of child
• The annual war on mosquitoes has begun
• House bill ramps up Capitol tax debate
• Virginia Tech student touched by home state support following shooting
• St. Paul woman mauled by pit bulls

I take a few minutes out of each day to look at what is happening both globally and locally. The world is not looking great, but what's worse, Minnesota looks to be spiraling along with it. I read to stay educated and am starting to feel as though news outlets report only horrible stories and sensationalize them for effect. It is simply depressing. I want to stop reading these headlines but feel as though I will be left behind in conversation and knowledge of the happenings in my state. I should stick to The Onion for news, at least you get a laugh. The State of the State: Not so much. What do you think?

NOT a fan of the media...but I still like to see the headlines...so I may watch the first few minutes of local news (when I am not running down/playing with Brooklyn), and I like to watch Fox News for the national headlines and or WCCO for the local weather forecast and the sports, which they always put at the end of the show...ESPN it is.

PS: I am listening to rumors that Katie Couric's days are numbered...haha!

I agree wholeheartedly....I get sick watching the news...the media focuses on the negative in everything. I heard a report on the news this morning that 18-35 year olds who watch shows like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" tend to be more informed about issues than those who watch the normal news outlets. The nice thing about these shows on Comedy Central is that a bit of humor is injected into the reporting, which I find can make the news easier to swallow.

For an example of the sometimes twisted humor that can seep onto the internet, search for the following phrases on Google and see what comes up as the first result:

"giant brass balls"
"Greatest Living American"

Wow, this one incited some comments. I googled both Joe, and that is awesome. I love the daily show and the Colbert report. They make me laugh even though I don't believe Jon Stewart's opinions are always valid.

I find myself avoiding the news lately...probably for reasons you've pointed out. I mostly just read nytimes.com and sometimes watch CNN. But this week I'm all about the Food Network. Now I just have to learn how to cook.
